Modern Home – Kohler Residence by Zack | de Vito Architecture

This 2,600 sq ft modern home replaced a derelict warehouse in the Mission District. It was designed to reflect the qualities of the existing warehouse, yet it manages to avoid feeling cold and stark. Check out those amazing pivot doors!!!

Birthday Surprises

Mom and Evan decided to be crazy spontaneous and make the 9 hour drive down to surprise me for me birthday. I have a sneaky suspicion it had more to do with the good waves that Hurricane Bill brought in than with me, but I’ll take what I can get.

Here is Brad serving as wingman to Evan. These two girls wanted to try surfing. They “tried” for about a half hour. (They tried my patience is what they did. We didn’t rent the board for her!) When they finally came back the girl was still with them so I said something to my mom about how great it was that Evan had a new puppy to follow him around all day. The girl then laid down on a beach towel about 4 feet away. Turns out her group was sitting right next to me listening to me complain about her for the last half hour. Oops. Lesson learned: if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.

Our latest challenge: Modern Stairs

Okay. I know exactly what I need as far as stairs go: open flight stairs with metal stringers on the sides. Looks like this:

modern stairs

Shouldn’t be too hard right? Guess again! Finding someone to fabricate them has proven to be well… nearly impossible. I’ve contacted a dozen metal fabricators and none of them are willing to do residential metal stairs. (This is yet another draw back to not living close to any major city.) I’ve found some stairs with metal tube stringers that could possibly work. I’d paint them gray and do something similar to this.

(via) The only problem is that I’m not sure it would pass the ball test with our railing. (A 4″ ball cannot pass through any section of the stair in order to pass code.)  This is why I would prefer side stringers. The stairs I found were also a little overpriced in my opinion. Maybe I should just give up and frame in the stairs. Not as cool, but less of a hassle and much, much cheaper. (Always a plus!)
